Isshin-Ryu Karate
The Karate Creed
I come to you with only Karate -- Empty Hands.
I have no weapons, but should I be forced to defend myself,
my principles, or my honor: should it be a matter of life and
death, right or wrong, then here are my weapons -- Karate -- My
Empty Hands.
- Ed Parker
Isshin-Ryu Karate is a practical style
of self defense, emphasizing natural stances and movements for defense
in street situations. Students will learn basic blocks, strikes, kicks
and katas (prearranged forms) and escape techniques. They will benefit
from the confidence of learning to protect themselves.
Kata, prearranged forms, are used as instruments in training
as they help the student discover the power that can be derived from
techniques. Emphasis is on proper form, focus, balance, coordination
and bunkai (practical applications). Bunkai will help develop
the understanding of the katas to a deeper meaning for the movements
and techniques.
Kumite, sparring or freeplay, is done with light to medium contact
using protective pads. Here the student will incorporate the knowledge
into practice, learning to defend and attack the entire body. The
student will also be developing timing, balance and reaction time.
